As school begins, I am showcasing some Guided Math Second Grade Place Value Activities for teachers to use in guided math groups. These activities will help students to understand place value in a concrete way. I love how it also shows the expanded form.
Activity #1 of Guided Math Second Grade Place Value Activities
Suzie create this idea. http://suzieshomeeducationideas.blogspot.com.au/2013/07/more-place-value-ideas.html
Take a place value chart for your grade level. In second grade, begin with two digit numbers so students can learn the concepts of value. Look how the students first use base ten units to show the value and write the standard number.
Next move to three digit numbers. Have the students use value cards to represent the value in each place. What a great visual for all learners!
Yes, you would eventually have all groups use larger numbers with four digit numbers. To challenge your higher students, move to the four digit numbers quicker.
You could have the students also write the expanded form on a dry erase board next to it. I love the fact that you can show the students how to do this activity. It can then move to a math station. Students could roll 4 dice, create a number and then show it on this board.
How about making this same board into an addition game? Suzie has the top section as one number. Then she adds another number in the bottom section. Students use the laminated graph paper to write the two numbers and add them. I think I would have them add the addition sign on the graph paper to show the addition equation.

Activity #2
Here is a free download. Show students how to use this one day in guided group and then put it in to a math station. This activity is a great math game that would be a good follow up activity to practice place value.
Thanks Rebecca Anderton for this great freebie!!
These Guided Math Second Grade Place Value Activities will help students understand math quicker because they are interacting with the math concepts.
