Here are some Preschool and Kindergarten Guided Math Subtraction Activities for teachers who want some hands on activities.  Students who learn through activities like these understand the concrete foundation of number sense.

Guided Math expert Ashley Perry tells teachers to show the students how to do these activities during small guided math group time.  Do this for at least two days so the students understand the math concepts and how to do the guided math activity. This allows the students time to develop the concrete understanding of the concept of taking away or subtraction.  Teachers should guide and intervene as the students practice in small group.  Make sure each student uses math talk as described below.

Subtraction Smash is a great activity.  Heather talks about this activity on the link below.  Kids will love using play dough.  In this picture she has dice to roll.  The students roll the dice and make that many play dough balls.  They roll the dice again and smash that many balls.  What fun learning  subtraction!!

Ashley Perry, a guided math presenter and teacher, adds that she would also use ten frames for the students to use with subtraction smash.  Ten Frames help the students to visualize numbers.  She would also add in dice that have ten sides so the students could work with larger numbers.

In this picture, Heather includes two spinners.  The student spins the first spinner and make that many balls.  Then the student spins the second spinner.  That is how many balls they smash as they subtract.  I like how Heather teaches her students to say the math talk, “___ minus ___ equals ___” as before they subtract smash.  Click on the link above for free mats.
