Once you click on that, this sample guided math lesson on writing number sentences opens up.  Love how this lesson uses manipulatives.  I suggest Greg Tang’s idea of using unifix cubes instead of base ten blocks so the students don’t get lost in the trading in of one ten for ten ones.  This lesson gives the objective and the CCSS.  It explains the activity and math concept to the teacher.  It even gives other ideas about using hundreds charts or ten frames, which are good tools for students to learn the foundational math concept.  Then look at the picture of the activity.

This lesson ends with more practice problems for students to do at the guided math table with teacher guidance if needed.

Look at the sample answer key.  I included a picture that has part of the practice problems and part of the challenge question.  Teachers use the challenge question in small groups after two days of practice.  Students partner up and talk about their reasoning.  This helps them work on process standards skills of reasoning, communicating, and perseverance.  If students understand the symbols and when to use them, they have developed a deep foundational understanding for this grade level.
