Adding Unlike Fractions in Guided Math

As I was searching for hands on activities for adding unlike fractions in Guided Math small groups, I found this activity .

Try using this lesson on adding unlike fractions in guided math small groups.  I love how this activity really “shows” the students what adding 4/10 + 7/100 looks like.  Let’s look at this lesson and some pictures from hand2mind.com

Once there, click in the search bar and search for “hands on standards”.  Once that shows up, on the left hand side, click “articles for hands on standards”.  I scrolled down to “Hands on Standards” or http://www.hand2mind.com/Brands/Hands-On-Standards       See the bottom article?

Next I scrolled down to Resources and Samples.  These are free lessons by grade levels with the state standard for math.  I clicked on Grade 4: Composing Decimal Fractions.

When you open it, you will see the whole lesson, whereas I have only copied part of it.  I LOVE THIS hands on lesson.  I can see the math.  I know students can see the math in action!!!  This will help students to visualize that 4/10 equals 40/100.

I love how this sample lesson includes the above picture so teachers can see how the lesson and hands on activity is supposed to work.  This lesson also contains more practice problems.  Teachers could use these in small guided math groups for further practice.

Manipulatives and other practice problems could be placed in a math station for further practice that would lead to developing good application skills.

AND guess what?  There is more…  This lesson also includes a challenge problem that could be used as an assessment.  Teachers could even use this on a large group guided math day to have students partner up and solve. Either way, this is a good lesson on adding unlike fractions in guided math small groups.
