This place value activity is one where the teacher shows the students in small guided math group to draw two numbers and model each on the ten frames.  Also the teacher would show them the symbols to compare.  Click on the link above to go to the post to download the free mats.

Ashley Perry, a Guided Math expert, would use the mats in small guided groups for several days before putting them into a guided math station for the students to continue applying the concepts for mastery.

#2 Guided Math First Grade Place Value Activities

This teacher created these colored sticks with magnetic strips on them.  I love how the students can see the number at the bottom of the stick and then place the paper clips on the stick to model the number.  Great idea for a guided math small group math lesson on place value and number sense.  Students can then practice this in a math center.  If your first graders have ipads, they can take a picture like this one when they are done to show they completed the activity.

This activity has students to write the standard form of a number and model it with base ten units.  This activity helps the students to practice the process standard of modeling.  Once students understand the value, the teacher can show them how to represent the values with the value cards.  For first grade this won’t happen right away.
