Guided Math Stations…What stations do I use?
Primary Grades should have a Number Sense station, a Math Fact station, and an Engaged Math Activity Station. Elementary Classes should have an Engaged Math Activity Station, a Skills Review Station, and a Math Fact station. Upper Elementary and Middle School Grades should have an Engaged Math Activity Station, a Skills Review Station, and a Math Fact or Algebra station.
Guided Math Stations… What is a number sense station?
In this station young students work on their knowledge and understanding of numbers. For instance, one idea is having students working with cards that have numbers written on them. The student picks a card with the number 5 on it. The student then rolls playdough out to make the number 5 and then pinches the playdough 5 times. Guided Math Stations…What are Engaged Math Stations?
Students master Common Core State Standards with guided math stations.
This station contains activities where students are manipulating math. I use several activities by Didax from several of their books using dice, Dice Activities for Math, Dice Activities for Multiplication, Dice Activities for Subtraction, Dice Activities for Mathematical Thinking. In these activities students roll dice and then follow simple directions. I like these guided math activities because of their simple directions, basic manipulation of math ideas, and algebra ideas. Students play these games and learn math along with algebra without struggling. They can be played with a partner or by self.
Guided Math Station… What is the Skills Review Station?
This station reviews previously learned skills. It allows students to continue to practice skills after they have learned the skills. I incorporate these review skills in chart form, algebraic format, and problem solving story problems so the students revisit these skills in a variety of forms throughout the year. Yes, it provides ongoing spiral review.
Guided Math Station… What is a Math Fact station?
Of course this station gives the students practice time on math facts. This station is one good place to incorporate technology. Xtramath.org is a good online site where teachers can have their students practice the operation they need to practice. This free site records the student’s progress. Another great site is mobymax.com. My students love this site!
